The Hurt Locker

Question 1:
Explain two ways the characters/and or events fit the action adventure genre.

The film, the hurt locker, fits the action/adventure genre for many reasons. First of all it’s a war film; this automatically means it will have some sort of action at some point in the film. In the scene of the suicide bomber, there are also action components. For example, there is a lot of shouting, mainly of commands, and soldiers running about to try and solve the problem. At the end the bomber explodes, explosions are another component of action/adventure films. Similarly to action/adventure films there is a villain, however in the hurt locker he isn't presented in the same way. He clearly doesn't want to do harm, but someone with more authority has ordered him to do it, which again often occurs in action/adventure films.

Question 2:
Explain how each of the following is used to create effects:
-Soundtrack
-Editing
-Mise En Scene
-Camera work

The soundtrack in this section begins tense. As Sergeant Angel comes back into Sandford on his white horse the music in the background is slow, as if it is anticipating an event. As he heads to the center the intensity suddenly increases as the first gunshots go off, as the action intensifies so does the music. They work together well because the audience know both from the noise and what they are watching that it is an important event.

Alike all other films made with a considerable budget the editing is very good. For example, as Angel is wading through the streets he passes many of the civilians who live in Sandford. As he passes the camera it performs a close up of their shocked faces as he returns.

The costume is futuristic because of the effects it has, for example it has guns and other devices that would be possible to use this current day. If the war happened now then we wouldn't survive, they need these costumes as a chance of survival. It gives extra protection against the enemy giving them a better chance of survival.

Scheduling

Who commissioned the programmes?
Bad Education- Chris Sussman                                                                                                                 Miranda- Cheryl Taylor

Who produced them?
Bad Education- Ben Cavey (BBC)
Miranda- Jo Sargent (BBC)

What audience are they aimed at? Why?
Bad Education- It is aimed at teenagers because it is based in a high school, this would appeal because teenagers will be able to relate to this.
Miranda- Middle aged people/families. Because Miranda is a middle aged woman it would appeal, they could relate to the main character. For families it is a comedy so would be found funny by many people.

Why are they on at that time and on that channel? Link to 'type' of comedy and target audience.
Bad Education-  It is broadcast on the BBC and at 10.00pm on Tuesday's.
Miranda- It is broadcast on the BBC at 8.30 on Wednesday's.

Are they on after the watershed? Why?
Bad Education- Yes because it includes bad language and would be unsuitable for a young audience, it also includes adult themes.
Miranda- No, it isn't as rude and so can be shown before the watershed.

The IT crowd

The IT crowd is a British Sit-Com (Situation Comedy). The main conventions to a Sit-Com include; canned laughter (when there is a audience's laugh when something happens, however, usually there won't be an actual audience). It also means that the majority of the series is filmed in the same location (room or building). The characters are also the same in every episode and the audience won't get to know about the character's past/future. Like most Sit-Com's each episode is 30 minutes long with a break 15 minutes through. Character's are also very stereotypical, for example there will often be a more confident character, a 'geek' or 'nerd' and then a more normal character trying to do what is right. And finally, there is often an ending that is significant to the rest of the episode.

Evaluation

1.)    How effective was your research into similar magazines and relevant target audiences. What did you learn from your research into these two areas? In what ways did this shape the creation of your magazine?

I feel like I did plenty of research when making my magazine.  I probably did the most research when I was making my contents page. I needed an idea to help me with the design; I found this inspiring as it gave me a good, successful idea.  I also used research to help me with my front cover. The idea of a simple front cover entered my head at the beginning, after doing research I realized that I could do this quite successfully. I also needed ideas with the color I was going to use/photo. Some magazines have one clear image and others have an amount of images helping it outline the things which would be included in the magazine. I decided to use a simple image and explain what would be included on my contents page in more detail.

2.)    What creative decisions did you have to make at the different stages of your magazine production? How did your magazine change as your work progressed?

As my work went on, I decided that some things had to change. For example, my film poster I originally used publisher because I didn't understand Photoshop at the time. However, as time went on it became clear that to get above a C I needed to use Photoshop. It took a while for me to get the hang of it but I learnt and I saw the good results at first hand when I completed my film poster. I also had to think about my double page spread layout. I did a lot of research and found one from match of the day magazine which I wanted to edit to make my own. I achieved this successfully as it looked realistic and similar to a real page in a magazine would.

3.)    How closely does your magazine follow the forms and conventions of existing magazines? Gives examples of real magazines you reference.

My magazine does follow the conventions quite closely. For example, my magazine cover is simple, which is similar to the 442 magazine. I think this works because having one image and only a bit of information is very effective. As well as this, my double page spread is information on one player; this often features in match of the day magazine about important players. My contents page is also simple. I think it is important for the reader to be able to see what is information is where, without making it too complicated. As well as this, my magazine has a clear, structured format and so it means it is available for more than one target audience, it could appeal to both teenagers and adults.

4.)    How successful is your finished magazine? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

I feel that my finished magazine was very successful; however, there could still be some improvements.  I think that my cover and double page spread were successful because they are both simple and effective. If it was on the shelves the cover would stand out. I also like the colors I used for the double page spread because they link with the player I used, his club colors and country colors. However, I think I could improve my contents page. I felt I may have rushed it a bit and maybe not got the colors or the format correct. I am also pleased with the fonts I used. They are fairly simple but they also fit the conventions of a sporting magazine.
